Tip Calculator

Free tip calculator with bill split — type in the bill, pick a tip percentage, and split the total between any number of people. Works in your browser, no sign-up.

Tip: $8.10 — total $53.10.

Type in the bill, choose a tip percentage, and (optionally) say how many people are splitting. The calculator returns the tip amount, the new total, and what each person owes.

The math

tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100

total = bill + tip

per person = total ÷ people

That’s all there is to it. The interesting question isn’t the formula — it’s the percentage.

What’s a normal tip in the US

Roughly:

  • 15% — adequate / minimum for table service
  • 18–20% — standard for good service
  • 22–25% — generous, high-end, or a difficult meal
  • $1–2 per drink (or 15–20%) — bars, counter coffee
  • 15–20% — taxis and rideshare
  • 10–15% — delivery (plus the delivery fee, which usually doesn’t go to the driver)

This varies by city and by year — these are the 2020s US norms. Other countries differ, sometimes drastically (Japan, no tip; much of Europe, service charges baked in).

Pre-tax or post-tax

The customary baseline in the US is the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total isn’t wrong, just slightly more generous (the tax becomes part of the base). Use whichever you prefer — type the number you want to tip on in the “Bill” field.

Worked examples

  • 18% on a $45 bill, just you

    Tip: $8.10 — total $53.10.

  • 20% on a $120 bill, split 4 ways

    Tip: $24.00 — total $144.00, $36.00 per person (4 people).

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in the US?

Standard restaurant service runs roughly 18–20% in most US cities; 15% is the bottom end for adequate service and 22–25% is good service or a sit-down meal in a high-cost city. Bars and coffee are usually $1–2 per drink or 15–20%. This calculator just does the math — what's appropriate depends on the local norm and your judgement.

Should the tip be on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

It's customary in the US to tip on the pre-tax subtotal — tipping on tax effectively tips the government. That said, many people tip on the total because it's easier to eyeball, and the difference is small. Enter whichever number reflects the convention you want.

How does the split work?

Total (bill + tip) is divided evenly across however many people you specify. It assumes everyone owes the same share. For uneven splits, calculate the tip on the whole bill, then divvy up the bill yourself.

Is the tip already included sometimes?

In the US it usually isn't, but parties of 6+ often get an automatic 18–20% gratuity, and that should be printed on the check. Outside the US, service is frequently included by law or by convention — check before you tip.
